Tana Gallery Bookshelf is pleased to present a solo exhibition of artwork by Canadian artist Michelle Zacharias. Currently based in both Kyushu and Kanto, Zacharias mainly works in painting and drawing with uniquely atmospheric imagery. In the nebulas of unidentifiable curves and shapes, her nearly abstract motifs deal with formless and ephemeral phenomena such as air currents, inviting the otherwise invisible into the visible or in other words, bringing that which is usually unseen into the domain of our perception.

The exhibition features two pieces from the "Asian Winds" series of monochromatic drawings. In this series, Zacharias travels to various places and collects pigments by extracting fine particles from dust in the air. The resulting color is both site-specific and relational, because the atmosphere of a microclimate represents not only a specific location but its complex relation to the rest of the world. Then the artist uses this found pigment to draw motifs that often involve the flow of wind and water over the earth. As such, Zacharias's motifs, process, and materials suggest the complex and inevitable connectedness of any place on the earth to the rest through various types of circulatory systems all over the globe. Similar to a travelogue, her work records the encounters of a human observer and non-human travelers sharing the same space for a moment, somewhere on the earth. One of the two pieces on display was drawn with dust collected from the building where the exhibition is held, and the other, a constellation of abstract fingerprint dots, was created with dust from Kitakyushu.

Zacharias's deep ecological aesthetics well reflects the age of anthropocene, in which our human activities have been proven to have a considerable collective impact upon the environment worldwide. There is no longer such a thing as nature untouched by human hands, but in the void of the old fantasy based on the human/nature dichotomy, we see a new sensitivity and a consciousness that enable us to discover hitherto unknown aspects of the world. Zacharias's drawings have a subtle variation in color, each of which represents the unique configuration of microscopic matter that exists in the apparently transparent air. It is influenced not only by natural environments but also by industrial activities and urban lives in the neighboring areas. We live in this matter or even take some into our bodies. Capturing those things that are otherwise non-existent in our perception of the world, the colors of air that Zacharias shows us push the boundary between human and non-human domains in the world of appearance, redefining the way we see ourselves and other things as deeply bound together in one and the same world.

This exhibition is held as part of the "Bigakko Chronicle 1969-2019" exhibition, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the art school in which the gallery is located. A related mini-exhibition is also concurrently being held at Cafe 104.5 in Ochanomizu, Tokyo.

Michelle Zacharias
Born in Canada but currently resides in Japan. As a visual artist, Michelle Zacharias always seem to be on the outside looking in. As a Canadian in Japan, that is definitely the case. Is she now a Canadian artist or a Japanese artist? Although this is the 21st century in a digital world, she is decidedly analog and works primarily in etching, conte crayon, and coloured pencil. Too conservative for the artsies and too artsy for the conservatives; too analog for the digital age and too abstract or organic for those painstakingly doing photographic copies. Do labels like these even work in an international or Internet context?
